Japan celebrates Respect for the Aged Day amid aging trends
Japan observed Respect for the Aged Day on September 21, marked by various community events and reflections on the nation's aging demographic. In Ishigaki, local officials honored 30 centenarians, including Myo Shinsei, who celebrated her 100th birthday with family and local dignitaries.
In Kyotango, a city known for its high concentration of elderly residents, longevity is attributed to factors such as diet, exercise, and social bonds. However, the rise in longevity brings challenges; projections suggest the number of elderly people without family support could exceed 10 million by 2050.
Local celebrations included free portrait sessions for seniors in Hakodate, water giveaways at public baths in Osaka, and family workshops in Chiba. Amidst these festivities, discussions regarding the etiquette of gifts and the social implications of an aging society continue to be prominent.
