Japan Respect for the Aged Day gift initiatives

In preparation for Respect for the Aged Day in Japan, various entities and retailers have introduced diverse gift-giving initiatives and commemorative activities.

Initial preparations included local government offerings and specialized mall features. Izumi City in Kagoshima Prefecture released a selection of hometown tax gift items, including Kagoshima eel, Hinohikari rice, and traditional shochu. Additionally, Alulu Mall introduced features for handmade and personalized gifts, such as DIY activities and custom-made items.

Retailers have expanded these options with specific products. In Fukuoka, the boutique French Closet promoted magnetic scarves in various colors, such as burgundy and monochrome, designed for easy maintenance. Exmail offered commemorative gifts ranging from practical items like tumbler and chopstick sets to decorative options such as soap flower balloon bouquets and photo frame telegrams. For the 2026 holiday, Exmail noted that orders for delivery on September 21 must be placed by September 20, though regional delays may occur.

Further activities include a pop-up event at the Daimaru Suma store from September 9 to September 22, featuring Relive Wear. This functional clothing, such as the Relive Shirt Core, is designed to support blood circulation and ease of movement, serving as a gift option. Additionally, Anime! Anime! launched a reader survey open until September 16 to identify the ‘ideal elderly character’ in anime, games, and manga.
