Japan Digital Agency implements AI to support government operations

The Digital Agency of Japan is deploying artificial intelligence to enhance administrative efficiency and support government personnel. One key application involves a collaboration with the National Police Agency to monitor social media for criminal recruitment posts, such as ‘dark part-time jobs.’ By using an AI system that classifies posts into three levels of suspicion rather than making binary legal judgments, the agency has reduced the workload for officers to less than one-quarter of previous levels.

Additionally, the agency is developing ‘Gennai,’ a dedicated generative AI platform designed to provide a secure environment for handling sensitive government information. The goal is to roll out this infrastructure to approximately 180,000 civil servants across all ministries and agencies by fiscal year 2026. The platform includes specialized tools for legal research, analyzing Diet responses, and proofreading official documents. The initiative aims to improve AI literacy among officials, encouraging them to move from mere users to creators of AI agents and prompts.
