Japan domestic travel spending rises as Kansai Airport traffic declines

Japan's domestic travel consumption rose by 11.7% year-on-year to 7.5361 trillion yen during the April–June 2026 period, according to data from the Japan Tourism Agency. This growth was primarily driven by overnight stays, which increased by 13.6% to 5.9578 trillion yen. While overnight travel saw double-digit growth across all three months, day trips showed mixed results, including a 1.0% decrease in June.

In a different sector of the travel industry, Kansai International Airport reported a decline in passenger numbers for July 2026. Total air passengers fell 11% year-on-year to approximately 2.48 million, with international passengers decreasing by 12% to 1.97 million, marking the eighth consecutive month of decline compared to the previous year.

The decline in international traffic was largely due to a 15% drop in foreign passengers, despite Japanese passenger numbers remaining stable. Regional trends showed significant variance: while traffic from China fell by 37%, routes to South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan all saw substantial increases. Meanwhile, total cargo handling at the airport grew by 6% to 73,533 tons.
