Japan energy firms launch AI-driven power and green data center initiatives

Mitsui Fudosan and TEPCO Energy Partner have completed the Nihonbashi 1-chome Energy Center in Tokyo. Scheduled to begin operations on October 1, 2026, the facility will provide stable electricity and heat to the Tokyo Midtown Nihonbashi district. The center utilizes an AI-driven energy management system, ‘EMSTEP’, to predict demand up to 30 hours in advance, optimizing the operation of high-efficiency cogeneration systems. This localized energy production is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 25% compared to individual building systems.

In a separate development, Hitachi, Tokyo Gas, Brookfield Japan, and Hartree Partners have announced a collaboration to develop ‘power-attached green data centers’. This initiative aims to address the surging electricity demand driven by AI by integrating power generation facilities, such as battery storage and gas cogeneration, directly with data center sites. The first projects are being considered for the Kanto and Kyushu regions. This strategy seeks to bypass grid constraints and the long wait times for utility connections while supporting decarbonization goals.
