Japan executes Osaka arsonist Sunao Takami
Japan has executed 58-year-old Sunao Takami by hanging, marking the first execution under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's administration and the first in the country in approximately 14 months. The execution took place at the Osaka detention center following a decision by Justice Minister Hiroshi Hiraguchi.
Takami was convicted for a July 2009 arson attack at a pachinko parlor in Osaka, where he used gasoline to ignite a fire that killed five people—four customers and one employee—and injured 10 others. During his legal proceedings, the defense argued that Takami suffered from mental delusions and diminished capacity; however, the Osaka District Court, the Osaka High Court, and the Supreme Court all ruled that he was fully responsible for his actions. His death sentence was finalized in 2016.
Justice Minister Hiraguchi described the crime as extremely brutal and meticulously planned, noting it caused significant shock and fear within society. Japan remains one of only two G7 nations, alongside the United States, that continues to practice capital punishment. Currently, approximately 100 people remain on death row in Japan, with 43 individuals seeking retrials.
