Execution of Sunao Takami in Japan

Overview

Japan has executed 58-year-old Sunao Takami by hanging at the Osaka detention center. Takami was convicted for a July 2009 arson attack on an Osaka pachinko parlor that killed five people and injured ten others. Although the defense argued Takami suffered from mental delusions, the courts ruled he was fully responsible for the crime.

The execution, authorized by Justice Minister Hiroshi Hiraguchi, marks the first capital punishment carried out under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s administration and the first in Japan in approximately 14 months. Following Japanese protocol, Takami was notified of the execution on the morning of the event.

Japan remains one of only two G7 nations, alongside the United States, that continues to practice capital punishment. While public polls indicate high support for the practice, there is ongoing societal debate regarding the prison system and the conditions of death row inmates.
