Japan experiences earthquakes in Ibaraki and Miyagi prefectures

Multiple earthquakes were recorded in Japan near the Miyagi and Ibaraki prefectures.

On September 28, 2026, at approximately 9:04 PM, a magnitude 3.5 earthquake occurred with its epicenter off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture. The tremor reached a maximum intensity of 1 in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures at a depth of 50km. No tsunami threat was reported.

On September 29, 2026, at approximately 4:45 AM, a stronger magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of approximately 50km. The quake produced a maximum intensity of 4 in several locations, including Joso, Chikusei, Bando, and Tsukubamirai in Ibaraki, as well as parts of Saitama Prefecture such as Saitama Central, Saitama Minami, and Kasukabe. Tremors were felt across several surrounding prefectures, including Tochigi, Gunma, Chiba, Tokyo, and Kanagawa. No tsunami was expected from this event.
