Seismic activity in Japan
Overview
In late September 2026, several earthquakes were recorded across different regions of Japan.
On September 22, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurred off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture at a depth of approximately 30km. Shaking was felt in Fukushima and Miyagi Prefectures, reaching a maximum intensity of 1 on the Japanese seismic scale. No tsunami threat was reported.
One week later, additional seismic activity was recorded. On September 28, a magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture at a depth of 50km, with a maximum intensity of 1 in Iwate and Miyagi. This was followed on September 29 by a magnitude 4.9 earthquake in southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 50km. This second event produced a maximum intensity of 4 in several locations within Ibaraki and Saitama Prefectures, with tremors felt as far as Tokyo and Kanagawa. No tsunami was expected from these later events.
