Japan experiences series of moderate earthquakes in June 2026

On June 28, 2026 a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off Iwate Prefecture at a depth of about 40 km. The tremor was felt at low intensity in Hachinohe, Aomori, and no tsunami warning was issued. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged residents to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions.

Two days earlier, on June 26, a magnitude 5.8 quake occurred near the Oshino area at a depth of 50.9 km. No damage or casualties were reported. It was recorded as the 40th earthquake in the region during the past month, following a 6.9 quake near Iwate the previous day and a 7.2 quake earlier in the week.

Japan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences thousands of quakes each year. The country maintains advanced early‑warning systems and strict building codes to mitigate the impact of such seismic activity.
