Japan explores using Indian test ranges for missile drills

Japan has dispatched officials to India to investigate the possibility of using Indian missile ranges and test facilities for live-fire training. The exploratory mission, which included a week-long inspection of several sites, aims to address challenges in training for long-range weaponry.

Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) Chief of Staff General Masayoshi Arai confirmed the dispatch, noting that Japan is seeking ways to utilize training environments overseas to accommodate the full range of its new capabilities. A primary focus is the Type-25 anti-ship missile, which has an estimated range of approximately 1,000 kilometers—a significant increase from the 200-kilometer range of the previous Type-12 missile.

In addition to surface-to-ship missiles, officials are also discussing the potential for testing smaller attack drones. While inspections have taken place, no final decision has been made regarding specific missile systems or the commencement of actual training exercises.
