Japan long-range missile capability development
Overview
Japan has begun demonstrating and preparing for the deployment of its new Type-25 long-range guided missile system. During the Keen Sword joint military exercises with the United States and several other nations, the Japanese Ministry of Defense utilized the domestically produced Type-25 launcher for the first time at the Onohara maneuver area.
The Type-25 is an advanced anti-ship and ship-to-shore weapon with an estimated range of approximately 1,000 kilometers, a significant increase over the previous Type-12 system. This capability allows for engagement across the East China Sea.
To accommodate the requirements of these new long-range capabilities, Japanese officials have dispatched teams to India to investigate the use of Indian missile ranges and test facilities for live-fire training. Ground Self-Defense Force Chief of Staff General Masayoshi Arai confirmed that the mission aims to address training challenges posed by the increased range of the Type-25 and potential new attack drones.
