Mount Tokachidake volcanic alert raised to Level 3 in Hokkaido
The Japan Meteorological Agency has raised the volcanic alert level for Mount Tokachidake in Hokkaido to Level 3, the first time this level has been reached for the mountain since the current alert system was established in 2008. The decision follows an increase in large-scale volcanic earthquakes and crustal deformation observed since mid-August.
The alert prohibits entry to the 2,077-meter mountain and warns of potential large volcanic rock ejections within a 3-kilometer radius of the crater. In response, the Kamifurano town government has issued an evacuation order for the Fukiage Onsen area and advised elderly residents in the Tokachidake Onsen area to evacuate.
Authorities noted that while an eruption is not necessarily immediate, the intensification of activity warrants high caution. If current conditions persist through the snowy season, officials may consider raising the alert to Level 4, which involves mandatory evacuations for the elderly and vulnerable.
