Overview

By early September 2026, Typhoon 24 and linear precipitation zones brought extreme weather to Japan. In Aomori Prefecture, record-breaking rainfall continued, with Ajigasawa recording 260 mm. In Aomori City, a Level 5 emergency safety assurance was issued for the Asuka and Setoko districts following the flooding of the Setoko River, impacting 892 people across 456 households. In the Tsugaru region, a linear precipitation zone formed in the early hours of September 2, causing residential flooding, road inundation, and landslides in Hirosaki and Ajigasawa. In central Japan, unprecedented torrential rainfall triggered mass evacuation orders for hundreds of thousands of residents in Ishikawa, Toyama, and Fukui prefectures. As the weather persisted, heavy rainfall from Typhoon Krovanh and a tropical depression triggered a Level 5 special landslide warning for Yakushima, Kagoshima Prefecture, on September 4. The Onoaida district recorded a record 24-hour rainfall of 490.5 mm. Although the Level 5 warning was later downgraded to a Level 4 danger warning, authorities warned of imminent landslide danger. Infrastructure damage in Yakushima included a broken water intake in the Nagamine settlement, causing water outages, and fallen trees in Nishinoomote City. In the Kagoshima region, an elementary school student was rescued after being swept into a swollen drainage ditch. In Miyazaki Prefecture, intense rainfall led to Level 4 landslide warnings and evacuation orders for approximately 7,800 households, with reports of field flooding, fallen trees, and the closure of sections of National Route 10. By September 6, Typhoon 24 and associated low-pressure systems continued to threaten the country. Authorities issued warnings for heavy rainfall in the Kinki region—including Kyoto, Osaka, and Shiga—as well as the Kanto and Tokai regions.
