Japan Ground Self-Defense Force dismisses officer for embassy intrusion

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force announced on August 28 the dismissal of Koda Murata, a 24-year-old third lieutenant, following an incident in March where he forcibly entered the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo.

According to investigations, Murata traveled from Miyazaki Prefecture to Tokyo, purchased an 18-centimeter knife, and climbed the embassy wall. He reportedly intended to demand that China moderate its rhetoric toward Japan and delivered a statement claiming that “Japanese patriots will kill you on behalf of heaven.” Murata admitted he intended to commit suicide at the embassy if his demands were not met.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense expressed regret over the incident, stating that Murata’s actions severely damaged public trust in the Self-Defense Forces and caused significant diplomatic impact. In response to the breach, the Metropolitan Police Department has increased security and patrols around the Chinese Embassy. The Chinese Embassy previously lodged formal protests, seeking accountability from the Japanese government.
