Disciplinary misconduct in Japan Self-Defense Forces

Disciplinary issues within the Japan Self-Defense Forces have emerged through various incidents involving personnel misconduct.

In early August, several members faced consequences for diverse violations. At the Kaita base in Hiroshima, a member of the Ground Self-Defense Force was dismissed for theft. Simultaneously, at the Komatsu Air Self-Defense Force base, personnel received suspensions for voyeurism, a fatal traffic accident, and drunk-driving.

By late August, the Ground Self-Defense Force announced the dismissal of a 24-year-old third lieutenant, Koda Murata, regarding a March incident. Murata forcibly entered the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo armed with a knife, intending to demand that China moderate its rhetoric toward Japan. He reportedly stated that ‘Japanese patriots will kill you on behalf of heaven’ and intended to commit suicide if his demands were not met. The Ministry of Defense noted the incident caused significant diplomatic impact and damaged public trust, while the Metropolitan Police Department increased security around the embassy following formal protests from China.
