Japan hikes tourist visa fees up to fivefold starting July 2026

Japan announced a five‑fold increase in its tourist visa fees, the first revision since 1978. The cost for a single‑entry visa will rise from 3,000 yen (about Rp 331,000) to 15,000 yen (about Rp 1.6 million), while a multiple‑entry visa will go from 6,000 yen (Rp 661,000) to 30,000 yen (Rp 3.3 million). The new rates apply to applications submitted on or after 1 July 2026.

The change was approved by the cabinet on 19 June 2026 and explained by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi as a response to inflation and higher administrative expenses. The additional revenue is intended to help cover the rising costs of managing Japan’s growing foreign‑resident population, which reached 4.13 million at the end of 2025, and to fund an electronic travel‑authorization system targeted for fiscal 2028 that will screen travelers from about 74 visa‑free countries.
