Japanese lawmakers visit Beijing to mend ties with China

A cross-party delegation of Japanese lawmakers has arrived in Beijing to seek the restoration of diplomatic and economic ties with China. The mission follows a period of significant tension triggered by comments from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who suggested that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could constitute a survival-threatening situation for Japan, potentially justifying the use of force.

The delegation includes members from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, such as Gaku Hashimoto, as well as representatives from the opposition Komeito and the Centrist Reform Alliance. The group aims to meet with Chinese Communist Party officials to reopen communication channels that have been severed across various sectors.

Shinichi Isa, a spokesperson for the Centrist Reform Alliance and former diplomat, noted that bilateral relations have reached their lowest point since the normalization of ties in 1972. The diplomatic friction has already impacted economic relations, including trade restrictions and disruptions in the flow of rare earth minerals. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has urged the Japanese government to take concrete actions to create conditions for normal exchange.
