Minister Kazuo Yana denies budget pressure allegations

Agriculture Minister Kazuo Yana has denied allegations that he pressured the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to cut road budgets for municipalities that did not support him during the February general election. Yana previously claimed at a political gathering that budgets for Nasukarasuyama and Nakagawa were significantly reduced due to their support for opposing candidates.

A Ministry investigation released on October 6 concluded that there was no evidence of direct pressure or solicitation from Yana, though officials noted they kept no formal records of the inquiries. Despite this, the Mayor of Nasukarasuyama stated that the findings have only deepened suspicions regarding the budget discrepancies.

During Diet sessions, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the controversy, asserting that budget allocations must remain independent of political support or opposition. While opposition parties continue to demand accountability and potential dismissal of the minister, Yana has refused to resign, stating his intention to focus on agricultural administration.
