Japan Ministry of Agriculture considers repurchasing 150,000 tons of rice reserves
Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is coordinating a plan to repurchase approximately 150,000 tons of government rice reserves, potentially as early as September. Following a large release of stockpiles last year, the national reserve has dropped from its standard 1 million tons to a level of 320,000 tons.
Agriculture Minister Suzuki stated during a press conference on August 25 that the government will make an informed decision regarding the repurchase after the official report on the 2026 rice crop condition is released on August 31. The ministry aims to balance market price stability with the need to maintain adequate reserves.
The final decision on the timing and volume of the repurchase will follow discussions at an expert committee meeting scheduled for September 2. The government is also reviewing paddy field policies and budget requirements to ensure a stable food supply and support for producers amidst fluctuating market prices and regional price trends.
