Japan mobile market sees rise in low-cost SIM competition
The Japanese mobile market is seeing increased competition from low-cost SIM providers offering highly competitive data plans. HIS Mobile has announced its ‘Jiyu Jizai 3.0 Plan,’ set to launch on September 17, 2026. This new lineup features significant price reductions, including a 30GB voice SIM plan priced at 1,999 yen per month. The plan also includes a benefit providing one free annual eSIM for international travel, offering 4GB of data for 15 days across 130 countries.
Other providers like y.u mobile, a joint venture between U-NEXT HOLDINGS and Yamada Holdings, offer simplified pricing models. Their ‘Single’ voice SIM plan starts at 1,070 yen for 5GB, which can increase to 10GB through specific promotional benefits. y.u mobile also features a data rollover system that allows users to carry over unused data for up to 100GB.
To optimize mobile spending, experts suggest consumers analyze their monthly bills to distinguish between actual communication fees, device installment payments, and unnecessary optional services. Identifying whether high costs stem from data overages or device financing is a critical first step before switching to a more economical provider.
