Japanese low-cost mobile market competition
Overview
The Japanese mobile market is experiencing increased competition from low-cost SIM providers offering aggressive pricing and specialized benefits.
HIS Mobile, a joint venture between travel agency HIS and Japan Communications Inc., announced its ‘Jiyu Jizai 3.0’ pricing plans scheduled for launch on September 17, 2026. The new structure aims to keep all seven data tiers below 2,000 yen per month, including a 30GB plan priced at 1,999 yen that features a 6-minute unlimited calling option. To differentiate its service, HIS Mobile is integrating travel benefits, such as a yearly free 4GB eSIM valid in over 130 countries and regions.
Other providers are also contributing to the competitive landscape. y.u mobile offers simplified pricing, including a ‘Single’ voice SIM plan starting at 1,070 yen for 5GB, alongside a data rollover system. As competition intensifies, experts advise consumers to analyze their monthly bills to distinguish between communication fees, device installments, and unnecessary optional services to optimize spending.
