Japan financial trends show rising wealthy households and pension updates
Recent data and policy updates highlight shifts in Japan's financial landscape. The number of wealthy and ultra-wealthy households in Japan reached approximately 1.65 million in 2023, the highest level since 2005.
Financial asset holdings vary significantly by income. Households earning over 12 million yen annually hold an average of 56.35 million yen in financial assets, while those with no income hold an average of 6.34 million yen. Investment in stocks and investment trusts is becoming more common among standard income earners, not just high-income groups.
Regarding social security, the 'Earnings-Related Old-Age Employees' Pension' system in 2026 stipulates that if the combined total of the basic monthly amount and the total monthly remuneration equivalent exceeds 650,000 yen, pension payments may be reduced. Bonuses are factored into this calculation by dividing the total bonuses from the previous year by 12.
Additionally, Toyonaka City has implemented a new system for the exemption of national pension insurance premiums for childcare, effective October 1.
