Japan Passes Law Requiring AI-Generated Content Disclosure in Election Campaigns

Japan's parliament approved new legislation that tightens rules on social‑media use during elections. The law obliges platform operators to curb the spread of false information and to disclose AI‑generated images or videos related to candidates. It also requires users to label AI‑created or altered content.

The measures, backed by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, the Japan Innovation Party and several opposition groups, will take effect by 1 March 2027, ahead of the upcoming unified local elections. While the law imposes no direct penalties on platforms for non‑compliance, the communications ministry will issue guidelines and require annual disclosures on implementation. The legislation mirrors aspects of the EU's approach, signalling Japan's move toward stricter oversight of digital political discourse.
