Japan pension and social insurance updates for 2026

Japan is implementing several updates to its pension and social insurance systems for 2026. The Pension Life Support Benefit will see a 3.2% increase, with monthly payments for elderly pensioners set at 5,620 yen and 7,025 yen for those with Grade 1 disability.

Regarding employment, the threshold for the ‘Zaishoku Rourei Nenkin’ (pension for working seniors) will rise from 510,000 yen to 650,000 yen in April 2026, making it less likely for pensions to be suspended due to high earnings. Additionally, the ‘1.06 million yen wall’ for social insurance eligibility is expected to be abolished in October 2026.

For employees, the standard remuneration for Employees' Pension Insurance will impact monthly deductions. For instance, monthly salaries between 330,000 and 425,000 yen will result in deductions in the 30,000 yen range, while those exceeding 425,000 yen will enter the 40,000 yen range. Data for single-person households in their 40s shows an average financial asset holding of 8.59 million yen, though the median is significantly lower at 1 million yen.
