Japan economic data shows income gaps and retirement financial challenges

Recent data highlights significant economic disparities and financial challenges regarding income and retirement in Japan. According to the National Tax Agency, the average annual salary for private sector employees is 4.78 million yen. While a 5 million yen salary exceeds this average, the figure varies significantly by gender and employment status; for instance, the average for men is 5.87 million yen, while for women it is 3.33 million yen.

Retirement security remains a critical concern. For single households in their 60s, the median financial asset holding is 3 million yen, despite an average of 13.64 million yen. Among single, unemployed households aged 65 and older, monthly expenditures often exceed disposable income by nearly 30,000 yen.

Furthermore, complexities in the pension system can lead to significant losses. Failure to claim benefits, such as the special old-age employees' pension, can result in millions of yen being lost due to statutes of limitations. Regarding coverage, individuals can remain enrolled in the employees' pension insurance (Kosei Nenkin) until age 70.
