Japan elderly households comprise over half of public assistance recipients

Recent data from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reveals that elderly households now account for 55.3% of all public assistance recipients in Japan. Among these, single-person elderly households make up 51.7%.

Financial analysis indicates significant hardship for unemployed single households aged 65 and older. These households report an average monthly disposable income of 118,465 yen against consumption expenditures of 148,445 yen, resulting in a monthly deficit of approximately 29,980 yen.

While the total number of households receiving public assistance decreased by 2,424 compared to the same month last year, reaching a total of 1,642,778 households, the high concentration of elderly individuals highlights growing concerns regarding pension adequacy and the risk of poverty in old age.
