Japan implements childcare levies and pension support measures

Japan is implementing several financial measures and support systems affecting various demographics. Starting April 2026, a childcare support levy will be added to medical insurance premiums. For employees with an annual income of 4 million yen, the individual monthly burden is estimated at 384 yen, with the cost split between employer and employee.

In Kai City, Yamanashi Prefecture, a 10,000 yen per person benefit is being distributed to combat rising prices and energy costs. Residents must complete applications via mail or online by September 30, 2026, to receive the funds.

Regarding elderly support, the Pensioner Support Benefit provides additional monthly payments (approximately 5,620 yen for fiscal year 2026) to those whose public pension and other income fall below specific thresholds and who meet municipal tax exemption requirements. Additionally, while certain pensioners may be exempt from filing tax returns under the ‘no tax return required system’ if their pension income is below 4 million yen and other income is below 200,000 yen, filing may still be beneficial to claim medical or donation deductions.
