Japan pledges $10 million in emergency aid to Yemen and Djibouti
Japan has announced $10 million in emergency humanitarian aid for Yemen and Djibouti to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the region. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the funding is intended to support peace and stability near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, an area of critical importance for international energy security.
Of the total amount, $8 million is allocated to Yemen. This includes $3 million for food via the United Nations World Food Programme, $3 million for health, water, and hygiene through the International Committee of the Red Cross, and $2 million for shelter and non-food items through the International Organization for Migration.
Djibouti will receive $2 million via the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for protection, shelter, and non-food essential supplies. This aid comes amid intensified conflict in Yemen between Houthi rebels and government forces, which has displaced over 184,000 people since August 1.
