Japan protests and ICC sanctions amid Gaza humanitarian crisis

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered at Ikebukuro Station in Tokyo to express solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Participants condemned Israeli military actions and called for an end to military cooperation between Japanese companies and Israeli defense firms, specifically urging a halt to the purchase of military drones.

Concurrently, the International Criminal Court (ICC) faces significant pressure following the issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant regarding alleged war crimes in Gaza. The United States has implemented sanctions against the ICC and its leadership, including President Akane Tomoko, citing threats to sovereignty.

In response to the sanctions against the ICC, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi expressed strong opposition, stating that Japan remains a steadfast supporter of the court's independence and fairness. The ICC has begun implementing measures, such as transitioning to European IT systems, to mitigate the impact of potential U.S. financial and travel restrictions.
