Japan provides rice aid to Burundi as Sudan seeks AU mediation

Japan has granted Burundi a food aid donation consisting of 2,500 tonnes of rice, valued at approximately 305 million Yen (over 2 million USD). The agreement was formalized through an exchange of notes between the Japanese Embassy and the Burundian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to Edouard Bizimana, Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the proceeds from the sale of this rice will be used to support development projects in alignment with Burundi’s long-term economic goals.

Separately, a high-level delegation from Sudan’s Transitional Government for Peace met with Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, who is currently serving as the Chairperson of the African Union. The delegation, led by Minister Ibrahim Al-Mirghani, discussed diplomatic pathways to achieve lasting peace in Sudan. The delegation emphasized the need for an immediate humanitarian truce, secure aid corridors to combat hunger, and an inclusive political process to address the root causes of the Sudanese crisis.
