Japan raises visa fees fivefold for all foreign visitors

Effective 1 July, Japan will increase entry visa charges for all foreign nationals for the first time in nearly 50 years. A single‑entry visa will cost 15,000 yen (about £70), up from 3,000 yen, while a multiple‑entry visa will rise to 30,000 yen, up from 6,000 yen. The government also raised the ceiling for permanent‑residence applications to 300,000 yen – 30 times the previous limit – and set a 100,000‑yen fee for changes to resident status or extensions.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the hikes are intended to align Japan’s visa fees with those of other countries and reflect the weaker yen after the pandemic, adding that officials do not expect an immediate impact on inbound tourism. Other travel‑related charges have been increased at the same time.
