Japan raises visa fees fivefold from July

The Japanese government announced a fivefold increase in visa fees that will take effect on 1 July. A single‑entry visa will rise from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen (about €81), while a multiple‑entry visa will go from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen (about €162).

This is the first adjustment in 48 years and is intended to offset inflation, currency fluctuations and higher administrative costs as the foreign resident population grows. Officials also aim to bring Japan’s fees closer to those of western countries and to strengthen the immigration system.

The government does not expect an immediate impact on tourism. In the previous year, 42.7 million visitors came to Japan, falling to about 37 million in 2024, with the majority from China. The target is 60 million annual visitors by 2030.
