Japan Raises Visa Fees Fivefold Starting July 2026

The Japanese government announced a five‑fold increase in visa fees for foreign visitors, effective 1 July 2026. Single‑entry visas will rise from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, while multiple‑entry visas will go from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen. The hike is the first since 1978 and is intended to reflect inflation, a weakening yen and to bring Japan’s fees in line with other G7 economies.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the increase is not expected to have an immediate impact on inbound tourism, which reached a record 42.7 million visitors last year. The fee revisions are part of a broader package that also raises charges for permanent‑residency applications and other residency‑related services.
