Japan records 11 strong quakes since April 2026

Since April 2026, Japan has experienced eleven earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher on the Japanese seismic intensity (shindo) scale. In the latest two‑week period, four strong tremors were recorded, including a shindo‑6 quake on June 26 in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, and shindo‑5 quakes on June 28 in Aomori and offshore Iwate. Experts say the Yamanashi event and the offshore Iwate quake are unrelated; the June 28 quake is considered an aftershock of a shindo‑6 earthquake on June 25. The Yamanashi quake, the strongest shaking in the area in 102 years, occurred about 30 km from Mount Fuji, but the Japan Meteorological Agency reported no change in volcanic activity and no risk of eruption. Scientists warned that the mountainous terrain could become unstable because of the wet season and recent typhoons, urging residents to avoid slopes and cliffs and to watch for signs such as unexpected water emergence or rumbling sounds. The agency has advised the public to remain vigilant for further strong earthquakes over the coming week.
