Japan records two serious bicycle accidents involving women, one fatal
In the early hours of 7 July, a senior woman riding a bicycle was struck by a vehicle on a one‑lane prefectural road in Tarui, Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture. Police say the driver fled the scene, classifying the case as a fatal hit‑and‑run. The victim was taken to hospital in an unconscious state and died about 40 minutes later. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the fleeing vehicle.
On 8 July, a 40‑year‑old female office worker was hit by a light‑truck at a cross‑road in Akita City, Akita Prefecture, after the truck attempted a right turn. She suffered a severe head injury but survived. Police arrested the 62‑year‑old truck driver on the spot on suspicion of negligent driving causing injury. The woman was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
