Japan traffic accidents July 2026

Overview

The wave of traffic accidents continued into mid‑July. On 12 July a woman riding a motorcycle entered a railway crossing opposite to traffic, collided with an oncoming car and was thrown onto the vehicle’s roof. She escaped serious injury, was fined ¥500 and the crash, captured on video, quickly spread on social media, drawing hundreds of comments.

Earlier incidents this month included a head‑on collision in Shirataka, Yamagata that left a motorcyclist with a broken spine, a lane‑change crash at Okaya Junction that fractured a civil‑servant’s waist, a fatal hit‑and‑run of a senior cyclist in Tarui, Osaka, and a right‑turn failure in Akita City that injured a 40‑year‑old office worker. Together with prior crashes involving trains, trucks, cars, motorcycles and a cyclist in Kagoshima, the July reports underscore persistent safety challenges on Japanese roads, particularly at unsignalled intersections, construction zones and abnormal manoeuvres, and highlight ongoing investigations into driver negligence and hit‑and‑run incidents.

On 14 July two fatal truck collisions were reported. In Fukuoka Prefecture a dump truck travelling the wrong way collided head‑on with an oncoming truck on a bypass; the truck driver died three hours later while the dump‑truck driver survived with injuries. In Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, a head‑on crash between a truck and a passenger car caused the truck to catch fire; one truck occupant died, another was seriously injured, and the car driver was hospitalized. Police are probing the causes of both accidents, adding to the month’s pattern of severe road‑safety incidents.
