Japan revises childcare leave benefit maximums
Japan has implemented revisions to the maximum payment amounts for various childcare leave benefits effective August 1, 2026. The revisions affect four specific types of benefits under the employment insurance system, including the Birth Childcare Leave Benefit and the Childcare Leave Benefit. For instance, the maximum amount for the Childcare Leave Benefit at a 67% rate has increased to 332,454 yen.
Regarding the management of these benefits, individuals performing short-term or gig work, such as through platforms like Timee, during their leave must accurately report their working days and hours. To remain eligible for benefits, workers must generally limit their employment to 10 days or fewer per month, or 80 hours or fewer if working more than 10 days.
Failure to report side income or working hours can impact the disbursement of childcare leave benefits. It is recommended that employees consult with their company's human resources department or Hello Work if they have unrecorded working history to ensure compliance with benefit requirements and company side-job regulations.
