Japan rice prices drop below 3,000 yen per 5kg amid supply surplus
Rice prices in Japan have seen a significant decline, with the average price for 5kg falling to 2,971 yen (including tax) during the week of September 7–13. This marks the first time in approximately two years that prices have dropped below the 3,000 yen threshold, signaling a shift from recent shortages to a surplus.
The current situation is driven by increased supply and rising inventories. While new rice distribution has begun, large stocks of previous year's rice remain. In some regions, such as Kagoshima, a price inversion has occurred where new rice is cheaper than older stock.
While lower prices benefit consumers facing inflation, the trend poses risks to farmers. Advance payments from agricultural cooperatives (JA) for the 2026 crop have dropped by 30% to 50% in some areas, potentially threatening the viability of farming operations due to fixed costs like fertilizer and fuel. Additionally, critics have pointed to contradictions in government policy, noting that the state plans to buy back 210,000 tons of rice despite the current surplus, which may interfere with natural market price mechanisms.
