Japan rice prices drop significantly amid new harvest season

As the rice harvesting season begins in Japan, the market is experiencing a significant shift in pricing. Following the ‘Reiwa Rice Riot’ of 2024-2025, which saw prices spike, a subsequent decline in prices is occurring due to record-high private inventories and shifts in consumer behavior.

According to JA Wakayama, the estimated price for first-grade Koshihikari rice has dropped to approximately 16,000 yen per 60kg. This is nearly half of the 30,000 yen price seen last year. While lower prices provide relief to household budgets, they present a serious challenge for farmers facing high costs for fertilizers and fuel. The current market volatility raises concerns regarding the long-term sustainability of rice farming and the potential for a shortage of successors in the industry.
