Japan rice prices fluctuate as new harvests hit markets

Rice prices in Japan are experiencing significant fluctuations as new harvests arrive. In Niigata Prefecture, the price of new Koshihikari rice has dropped substantially compared to the previous year. For example, JA Niigata City sold Koshihikari for 2,700 yen, a 2,000 yen decrease from the 4,698 yen price point seen in the prior year. While consumers have expressed relief at the lower costs for household budgets, agricultural leaders are concerned. Tomoaki Hasegawa, representative director of JA Niigata City, noted that farmers' take-home pay has decreased by approximately 40%, raising fears that rising costs for fertilizer and fuel, combined with low rice prices, could lead to an increase in farmers abandoning their land.

In contrast to the price drops seen in Niigata, premium varieties such as Ichihomare from Fukui Prefecture continue to command high prices. Some award-winning Ichihomare rice has been sold for as much as 4,000 yen for 2 kilograms in major Tokyo department stores like Isetan, highlighting a market divide between mass-market staples and high-end specialty varieties.
