Japan rice retail prices fall for sixth consecutive week
Average retail prices for 5kg bags of rice in Japan have declined for six consecutive weeks. According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on September 25, the average price for the week of September 14 to 20 was 2,934 yen, a decrease of 37 yen from the previous week.
Compared to the same period last year, prices have dropped by 30.9%. This downward trend is driven by the arrival of new rice harvests, which are being sold at lower prices than older stock. In some cases, new rice is priced below 3,000 yen per 5kg, while older 2025 stock remains above 4,000 yen and faces slower sales.
To manage inventory, wholesalers and retailers are utilizing discounts and promotions. Japan's Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Kazuo Yanawa, stated that prices have fallen below the 3,000 yen level and emphasized the necessity of maintaining a stable balance between supply and demand.
