Japan tech news: Google Store Omotesando opens and Tokyo Metro tests new gates

Recent developments in the Japanese mobile and transit sectors include the opening of the first Google Store in Japan, located in Omotesando, scheduled for August 13. The store will offer product pickups, Pixel Care+ services, device trade-ins, and technical support.

In telecommunications, SoftBank announced that its LINEMO brand will include SoftBank Starlink Direct satellite-to-smartphone communication and unlimited international data (up to 7 days per month) at no additional cost starting September 1, 2026. Additionally, the Amazon Kindle app for Android has implemented direct ebook purchasing functionality.

In public transit, Tokyo Metro is collaborating with Takamizawa Cybernetics to conduct pilot testing for automated ticket gates specifically dedicated to contactless credit/debit/prepaid payments and QR code boarding. These trials will take place at select gates in Ginza and Ueno stations to address congestion and recognition issues caused by multi-purpose gates.
