Japan to host sports symposiums on urban development and diversity

Two major symposiums focused on the social and structural roles of sports are scheduled for September 2026 in Japan.

On September 3, the Japan Sports Agency will host a symposium at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima regarding the promotion of “sports complexes.” The event aims to discuss how sports facilities can serve as hubs for sustainable urban development and regional revitalization. Keynote speaker and sports journalist Tetsuo Nakanishi will discuss community engagement through football, followed by a panel discussion featuring representatives from media, transportation, and local football clubs.

In conjunction with the 2026 Asian Games, the “Asia Dialogue on Sport, Diversity and Society” will be held on September 20 at the Nagoya International Center. Organized by Pride House Tokyo, the forum will address human rights, gender, and inclusivity within the sporting world. The program includes sessions on safe sports environments and the legal and social challenges facing LGBTQ+ individuals across various Asian contexts, featuring athletes, researchers, and activists.
