Japan sports symposiums on urban development and diversity

In September 2026, Japan is scheduled to host two major symposiums regarding the social and structural roles of sports.

On September 3, the Japan Sports Agency will hold a symposium at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima focused on the promotion of ‘sports complexes.’ The event intends to examine how sports facilities can act as hubs for regional revitalization and sustainable urban development. The program includes a keynote by journalist Tetsuo Nakanishi on community engagement through football and a panel discussion involving media, transportation, and local football club representatives.

Following this, the ‘Asia Dialogue on Sport, Diversity and Society’ will take place on September 20 at the Nagoya International Center in conjunction with the 2026 Asian Games. Organized by Pride House Tokyo, this forum will address human rights, gender, and inclusivity. Sessions will cover safe sports environments and the legal and social challenges encountered by LGBTQ+ individuals in various Asian contexts, featuring contributions from athletes, researchers, and activists.
