Japan to implement Kyushu Support Discount for tourism recovery

The Japanese government is coordinating the implementation of the ‘Kyushu Support Discount’ to assist the tourism industry following the Kumamoto earthquake. The measure aims to stimulate demand by using public funds to subsidize a portion of accommodation fees and tour costs.

Following the earthquake, the Kyushu region has seen a decline in tourists and a surge in hotel and ryokan cancellations. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism is currently finalizing details regarding the applicable areas, subsidy rates, and the timing of the rollout.

Similar support packages have been utilized in the past, such as the ‘Kyushu Recovery Discount’ during the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, which offered discounts of up to 70 percent, and the ‘Hokuriku Support Discount’ following the Noto Peninsula earthquake.
