Kyushu tourism recovery and discount initiatives
Overview
Tourism recovery efforts in the Kyushu region have emerged through both private sector initiatives and planned government intervention following a Kumamoto earthquake. In late July 2026, Toyota Financial Services and the Kyushu MaaS Council launched a discount campaign on the ‘my route’ travel app. This initiative, the ‘NAGASAKIぐる~んと myたびキャンペーン’, offers tourism tickets and travel bundles in Nagasaki Prefecture with discounts of up to 30 percent. Additionally, Sanden Traffic Co. introduced limited-time price reductions for its ‘Sanden 1-day Pass’ through the same application. To address the decline in tourists and surge in cancellations, the Japanese government has officially announced the ‘Kyushu Reconstruction Support Discount’ program (also referred to as ‘Kyushu Fukko Ouen War’). Scheduled to begin on October 1, the initiative will utilize approximately 15.5 billion yen from reserve funds to subsidize accommodation and tour costs. Subsidy rates are tiered based on the impact of the earthquake: Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures will offer up to 60% subsidies, while the remaining five Kyushu prefectures—Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita, and Miyazaki—will provide up to 50%. Specific caps apply to different travel types, including 20,000 yen for single-night stays, 30,000 yen for multi-night trips including transport, and up to 35,000 yen for tour packages spanning at least two prefectures. The Japan Tourism Agency will provide these subsidies to prefectures for distribution to travel agencies and accommodation providers. In Oita Prefecture, the local assembly has approved a supplementary budget of 1.08 billion yen to support the initiative. Officials there estimate the program will generate at least 54,000 overnight stays and produce an economic ripple effect of approximately 2.77 billion yen. One month after the earthquake, the economic impact remains varied.
