Japan to reform civil servant allowances and pension contribution limits

Japan is implementing significant changes to social security and benefit structures for civil servants and pension contributors.

According to a report by the National Personnel Authority, the dependency allowance for national civil servants will undergo a restructuring. The allowance for spouses will be abolished by fiscal year 2026 to reflect the rise in dual-income households. To compensate, the allowance for children will increase from 10,000 yen to 13,000 yen. Data shows that approximately 65.1% of national civil servants currently have no dependents, while 34.6% receive dependency allowances.

In a separate move regarding retirement planning, the monthly contribution limit for corporate-type Defined Contribution (DC) pension plans will be raised from 55,000 yen to 62,000 yen, effective December 2026. This reform aims to standardize contribution limits across different corporate pension structures and will also increase the limit for individual iDeCo contributions for employees without corporate pensions, raising it from 23,000 yen to 62,000 yen. These changes are intended to support asset formation and provide more equitable options for retirement savings amidst diversifying work styles.
