Japan to review age limits for children riding on bicycles
The National Police Agency is initiating a review of the age limits for children permitted to ride in toddler seats on bicycles. Currently, regulations in various prefectures allow children to ride as passengers only until they enter elementary school.
Following requests from parents who expressed concerns about letting young elementary students ride alone, the Automobile Safety Driving Center has established an expert research committee. This committee will conduct empirical experiments to determine the height and weight parameters required to ensure stable and safe bicycle operation.
The committee plans to conduct testing in December and compile a report within the current fiscal year. Based on these findings, the National Police Agency aims to consider revisions to the passenger age limits, with a target for finalizing considerations around March 2027.
