Japan has unveiled a comprehensive energy resilience strategy, dubbed ‘Power GX’, to mitigate vulnerabilities exposed by the US-Iran conflict and the resulting disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The plan, presented at a Green Transformation (GX) Implementation Council meeting, aims to reduce the nation's heavy reliance on Middle Eastern crude oil, which accounted for over 90% of imports prior to the conflict.

Key measures include supporting the construction of alternative pipelines in the Middle East to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. This will be facilitated through the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), which will provide financial support and risk-financing to encourage participation in these infrastructure projects. To diversify procurement, the government plans to implement a scheme where companies share the increased transportation costs of importing oil from non-Strait of Hormuz sources.

Additionally, the strategy focuses on building strategic reserves of naphtha to prevent petrochemical supply disruptions. The government also intends to maximize the use of nuclear power and support the development of next-generation perovskite solar cells to enhance energy self-sufficiency and meet rising electricity demands from AI technologies. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has directed that the strategy be finalized by the end of the year.
