Japan energy security and economic response
Overview
Japan is experiencing significant economic pressure due to disruptions in Middle Eastern energy supplies. Following reports that maritime activity for Western-aligned oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz has faced “near-total disruption” since May 2026, the Japanese government has approved a 19 billion dollar relief budget to combat rising inflation and economic instability. The Bank of Japan has also lowered its annual growth forecast to 0.5 percent while raising inflation projections to 2.8 percent.
In response to the closure of the waterway caused by the Iran war, Japan is developing an energy resilience plan to reduce reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. Through the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), the government intends to support alternative pipeline projects in Saudi Arabia and other nations to diversify crude oil routes.
To manage these shifts, Japan may implement a cost-sharing scheme for increased transport expenses, create strategic stockpiles for naphtha to prevent industrial shortages, and focus on maximizing nuclear power and next-generation solar technology to meet rising energy demands.
